About me

John Butler - MSc, Certified Passivhaus Consultant and AECB Carbonlite Retrofit graduate.

Hands-on experience of retrofit and new-build, combined with technical knowledge of materials, thermal comfort, building physics, and environmental impact of construction. Evidence led decisions, testing assumptions, and ensuring the best solution for clients, their buildings and the environment.

After completing a low-energy self-build retrofit and strawbale extension of a 1960s bungalow, I joined the inspiring Sustainability Adaptation and the Built Environment MSc at the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT). I graduated with distinction in 2016 and set up John Butler Sustainable Building Consultancy.

I work with architects, self-builders, heritage organisations, trade bodies and builders among others. I have contributed to papers and regularly return as a visiting lecturer on the MSc and MArch programmes at CAT. I recently joined the voluntary board of Straw-bale Building UK (SBUK) as a director, following on from being a co-author of the new Straw Construction in the UK Technical Guide.  I have been a Certified Passivhaus Consultant since 2019.
